QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE ELDERLY

The quality of life  can  be measured by "feel good factors":

Presentation Neat & tidy dressing improves self image and creates a good impression.

Independence in Activities of Daily Living

Maintains dignity.

Fair Health Encourages meaningful activities.

Sound and Supple Mind A Clear and active mind can dispel gloom. The body follows the mind, not in reverse.

Plenty of interests A full diary keeps the body active, the mind alert.

Usefulness A sense of worth increases when one is useful to family friends or the community.

The day becomes purposeful by extending hobbies, work skills, chosen activities or by providing help to those seeking it. There is a dynamic effect from an improved quality of life in middle age which can push back old age as far as 80 ... 85...90...90+ yrs.

A group of 300 elderly patients in England who had successfully recovered from major illnesses were questioned about the secret of their good quality long life.

HELPFUL HINTS FROM THEIR REPLIES :

  • Have a balanced diet with what you can afford. Perhaps supplement with vitamins and minerals once or twice a year.
  • Early to bed provides a better start for the next day.
  • Health care is more important than treatment for an illness. It is essential to visit your doctor in good time for advice.
  • Have a hobby to break the boredom from work.
  • Help others in distress; it minimises one’s own suffering.
